State highway officials on Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008, closed the Bankhead Tunnel under the Mobile River in advance of Hurricane Gustav. The tunnel-closing procedure entails first closing the large metal doors of the tunnel. The door seams are then sealed with giant gasket material. Afterward, sandbags are placed along the tunnel door to hold back any water. Because its entrances are lower than the entrances to the nearby Wallace Tunnels, the bankhead is seen as being more vulnerable than the Wallace Tunnels, which carry Interstate 10 under the river. Both tunnels have pumping systems to help remove any water that gets inside. For more Alabama news and videos, visit http://www.al.com/press-register/
