@McLarenMercedes yeah but sadly the mclaren wasnt competitive in the 79 season so he wouldnt have won that year either

He may have. In fact this is said to be the reason Peterson wanted to leave Lotus for 1979. He was most likely about to sign for McLaren for 1979.

Superswede won the 1974 Monaco driving the Lotus 72, a car which had debuted in 1970 and was in its 5'th season. He won 2 more races in 1974.
Peterson had 9 poles in 1973 and the most laps led that season. Mechanical trouble and his fight with Fittipaldi lost him the title, which went to Stewart.
Peterson himself never could explain why he was so fast, he just explained he drove as fast as he could.
In 1978 he was told not to challenge Andretti for the title and was frustrated.
