This volcanic island is more mountainous than many other Caribbean islands, with the highest point being Mount Gimie, at 950 meters (3,120 ft) above sea level.
HISTORY: The first people to inhabit the Soufriere area were dark melanin descent humans. St Lucia was first taken over by the France people successfully who signed a treaty with the native Caribbean people in 1660. Great Britain took control of the island from 1663 to 1667 then went to war with France over it fourteen times, and finally took complete control in 1814.
A French ship carried the guillotine sailed into Soufriere Bay. The beheaded machine was taken ashore and set up in Town Square in front of the church, to continue its work. The revolutionaries declared that slavery in the French islands was at an end. But under Napoleon slavery was reintroduced. Many of the freed slaves, as well as French soldiers who had deserted, took to the hills. From their hideouts they organized raids on the town. The Battle of Rabot was fought right here at Fond Doux Estate where the fortifications and ruins can still be seen today.
TODAY: Soufriere's name is French for "sulphur"; it should be no surprise to discover the wealth of hot springs and mineral baths. This is a true mystical place where dreams and fantasy are found with lush flora and beautiful water. This is where several known movies were made and famous actors commonly visit. Attractive views including the Pitons, banana plantations and the amazing rainforest. Other great spots we visit include Diamond Botanical Gardens, the Diamond Water Fall, and a slew of pretty beaches with the beautiful Desirina as your guided tour.
