  • I live in the small town of Lakeview ohio , I am a local fire fighter we lost cell com for 3 days and we do have generators on our sites. This was during an ice storm witch cut off most roads to cell locations. what i am saying is it all depends on what is happening that was the first time in 8 years we lost cell com and amiture operators came to the rescue leting us know who needed what

  • Thank you for sharing that story! There are a bunch of people who poo poo the idea that there can be a "Communication blackout" for what ever reason.

  • I read that during that during the 2003 Black out, people in New York were still able to use the cell service and make calls. Also, I came across a blog of guy who returned home after Katrina who mention that while he was not very successful with cellular calls, he was able to use the Texting feature. I wouldn't doubt that many major cities have some form of back up power system for cell services, but Id rather use it to compliment my current Emergency Comm. System.

  • Some (not all) cellular companies have a battery back up for their cell towers. They are usually easy to spot, they have a little building next to the tower. Cities DO NOT provide back up power fr cell sites. Texting is a valuable thing to know how to use.
