diddly squat said... found this page after surfing the web for The Surf Drums...Their web presence is virtually non existant, Strange really in these times as most people have acsess to a computer and I thought one of the ex members might have turned up somewhere on line......Anyway what can i tell you about the Surf Drums...They were indeed a Birmingham Based band that consited of Dave Kehoe ( Guitar, Vocals), Anne-Marie Taylor (Organ), Colin Packwood (Bass), Richard Left (Guitar), Mark Lafolley (Drums)...I'm a bit shakey on when they first formed but I think sometime in 1984, ...They released their first 12" e.p on local label Swordfish Records in 1985 consisting of four tracks including "These 7 Years" and "Stone and Silver". The sound on this EP is slightly different to the harder edged 60's vibe of "Walkaway" and "Black Tamb.", but you can hear traces of what was to come. and those 2 songs would still crop up in their sets occasionly, 2 years later. Over the next year or so the band honed it's image, all members ended up with a bob cut and 3 of them went peroxide blonde, and sound. In 1987 they signed a management contract with "Slaughter" Joe Foster (Of Creation Records fame), who also put out and produced their next 2 singles "Walkaway" and "Black Tamb." on his own Kaliedoscope Sound label (Home at one point to My Bloody Valentine). They gigged quite regularly around the country and had a strong set of songs in their set "Where are You now" being a fave of mine. They even did a mean version of the Undertones "You Got My Number". midway through 1987 Drummer Lafolley left and was replaced by Paul Tibetts. In 1988 their was a split in the band when Colin Packwood, Anne Marie Taylor and Paul Tibetts left to form Korova Milkbar ( they released records on the bristol based Subway records and Midlands based Chapter 22, These being produced by Pop Will Eat Itself?/ Bently Ryhthmn Ace's Richard March (He was married to anne Marie Taylor. Their sound again was totally different to the Surf Drums, but worth checking out.) Dave Kehoe and Richard Left carried on recruiting former Primitives Drummer Pete Tweedie and a bass player whose name escapes me, deciding to leave the organ sound out of the band, they also split from Joe Foster and tried to negociate a management deal with Primitives manager Wayne Morris, who by now was trying to build up a roster of bands having signed up Birdland. Their was a tour being planned with The Primitives, Birdland and The Surf Drums and a girl Duo The Impossibles rather like a 60's package tour but in the end it never came off and one date was played at the Boston Arms in London. The band played a few more gigs and i believe recorded a demo and then things went quiet. Richard Left played on the Final Felt LP "Me and a Monkey on the Moon" and was in the band on their final gig atBirmingham Burberries, he later joined back up with his bandmates in the final line up of Korova Milkbar......as for where they are now ...who knows but they did shine bright back in the day. 22 March 2009 22:12
