When I was quite young, my grandfather had a late 30's Silvertone Console radio in the basement, under the stairs. Every once in a while we'd go down and plug it in... I expected to hear voices and music from the 1930's also! Anyway, one day it quit working, and eventually got sold in a yard sale. I always wanted my own antique radio, so I purchased this off of eBay. The electronics needed going through (Redwood Radio Repair)and the cabinet was refinished by a local shop. It looks gorgeous and plays well too. Gotta love the way the dial looks at night! Radio Netherlands on 49M.

  • I just bought one today at a garage sale. I want to try and sell it but i know nothing about them.

  • @Glorybetothelamb Good luck with that. It might sell pretty easily if it is all there, not corroded or water damaged and if the veneer is reasonable. Some people want a project as is... the thrill is in making something play again when it hasn't for a long time.

If you want to get it fixed and don't want to try it yourself, you might get in touch with the local amateur radio operator club.

  • Awesome Zenith vintage! Shortwave is still very active. Just make sure you have at least 40ft of wire for the antenna outside the window and latch it on to a tree limb or use a modded out mag mount antenna like I use on my Grundig! 73

  • Is it? What kind of broadcasts are you receiving on your rig? Anything European? Thanks.

  • Love i love the logo!

  • They don't make em like this anymore

  • Thanks for the tip. I have had alot of people offer me money for the radio. Maybe it's time to see what I actually have.

  • This is so cool ! I wonder if I can find one this old. I'm in Norway, and during WWII the Germans confiscated all radios, and few were returned to the owners after. That has made radios from the 20's and 30's extremely rare in my area. It's great to be able to see your radio :- )

  • check out my home brew antenna setup on my page. thanks!

  • Well, there's still plenty of Spanish language programming from South America and Cuba. And of course, all of those North American religious stations and the atomic clock signal. That would confirm that you receiver still works, if that's what you meant. There's just not much quality English language broadcasts any more. I finally bought a little CCrane Wifi internet radio to make up for the loss of shortwave programming. But, it's cheap and plastic-y and made in China of course!
