Well, Rutherford wrote the lyrics to "Deep in the Motherlode" (about the Nevada Gold Rush), "Ballad of Big" (about a cowboy vs Indians battle), "Say It's Alright Joe" (not specifically western, but the acoustic parts almost have a campfire song feel to them), and this song. Coincidence?

Somewhat. But I think this one was more universal like Burning Rope. Still, within the theme, though. Or like Scenes From a Nights Dream, which only mentions George Washington, to very loosely connect it.

That it could....although I did think of something else - I have heard that "And then there were Three..." had sort of a 'Western theme' to some of its songs, so I guess this could also apply to the unfortunate Donner Party.
