Recorded July 18, 2000. McCarthy is 120 miles northeast of Cordova at the foot of the Wrangell Mountains. It is connected to the outside world via the McCarthy Road spur (58-mile gravel road) of the Edgerton Highway to Chitina, and must be passed through to reach Kennicott, a destination of tourists seeking access to Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve. Kennicott is an abandoned mining camp in the Valdez-Cordova Census Area in the U.S. state of Alaska that was the center of activity for several copper mines. The camp and mines are now a National Historic Landmark District administered by the National Park Service.

I had a rental car but I didn't drive it into McCarthy. I flew in and out from Chitna.
