Jan. 11 (Bloomberg) -- Israeli troops, backed by warplanes, pressed forward in the Gaza Strip as Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said the army will fight until it accomplishes its mission and Hamas rejected an Egyptian-French truce proposal.

Israel is nearing the goals it set for itself, but more effort, determination and patience is needed to meet them, Olmert said. We can not lose, at the last minute, what we have achieved with unprecedented national effort.

Olmerts comments came after both Israeli and Hamas officials met with Egyptian diplomats to discuss a truce aimed at ending Israels 16-day military operation in Gaza. The campaign was launched to halt rocket attacks on southern towns and cities and arms smuggling into Gaza.

Khaled Mashaal, the Damascus-based Hamas leader, said his group will not accept any negotiations for a cease-fire while we are under fire. Let Israel withdraw first and our people live rightfully without a siege and with open crossings.

Hamas seeks the lifting of the blockade Israel imposed on Gaza after the Islamic militant group seized control of the seaside strip in June 2007 and ended a partnership government with Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas of Fatah.

Israeli troops killed several gunmen early today and the air force hit more than 60 targets, including a mosque used to store weapons, the army said in an e-mailed statement. At least 10 gunmen were killed, YNet online news site said. The conflict has killed 878 Palestinians and wounded at least 3,500, about half of them civilians, according to Gaza hospital officials. Twelve Israelis have died.

Air-Dropped Leaflets

The fighting came after Israel yesterday warned Gaza residents with air-dropped leaflets and phone calls that it plans to expand its assault.

The Israel Defense Forces will soon intensify its operations against tunnels, weapon storehouses and members of terrorist groups all over Gaza, the Arabic-language leaflets said. Palestinians living in northern Gaza said they received phone calls with a similar message.

We continue to operate toward the goal of bringing back quiet to the south and creating a reality where there is effective anti-smuggling activity, Defense Minister Ehud Barak said in remarks to the weekly Cabinet meeting, according to an e-mailed statement from his office.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Aboul Gheit yesterday denied that weapons are being smuggled from Egypt at a press conference in Cairo. Mashaal said Hamas wont accept any discussion about restricting its possession of weapons.
