  • I'd say you may blame the carpenter for the fact that you need to know carpentry in order for your table to stand up, but that's just the way the music has been written.

Now, this reason obviously takes as its premise the notion that music is not merely an intellectual and distant art, one meant solely to be listened to and thought about; this reason assumes, rather, that music is meant to be experienced, that music should completely envelope the listener and be the focus of his many senses.
