Last weekend I headed to the beautiful Rainbow Beach to Film, and Photograph the amazing Grey nurse shark at Wolf Rock.
Wolf Rock is located near Rainbow Beach, a small seaside community surrounded by the Cooloola National Park and on the doorstep to Fraser Island's Great Sandy National Park.
The grey nurse shark is one of Australia's most endangered marine species. These beautiful creatures were almost hunted to extinction during the 1960's due to its fierce appearance. In 2008, Three grey nurse shark designated areas, which are also green zones, were provided in the Marine Parks (Moreton Bay) Zoning Plan.
The Department of Environment and Resource Management and Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation first introduced fishing and diving laws in the Moreton Bay Marine Park and at Wolf Rock off Double Island Point in 2003 to protect the grey nurse shark and its habitat.
The grey nurse shark is Endangered in Queeensland (Queensland Nature Conservation Act 1992) and Critically Endangered nationally (Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999). It is also considered a high priority for conservation under the Department of Environment and Resource Managements "Back on Track" species prioritisation framework.
The grey nurse shark occupies the continental shelf from the surf zone down to 190 metres below sea level. They are often in or near steep-sided gutters with sandy substrate or rocky caves.
In this video, I've aimed to get up close and very personal with these sharks to give others a taste, on just how beautiful these misunderstood creatures really are!
Enjoy!

  • @DamoWitty damo! 30 Meter vis and 22degrees in the water. sun was shining all day, small current was easy to avoid with a bit of over-weighting.

  • Amazing footage man, balls of steel being so close to sharks! One thing though, is it your audio file or my speakers giving me so much muffled feedback?

  • @TheLightfoot I think it's the audio file sadly, it's playing fine as file on my pc, something must have gone wrong during the upload to youtube. Im going to blame them anyway.
