Dear Governor Schwarzenegger -
As an American, I was taught that the freedom to express ones beliefs is fundamental to our society. But I was also taught that expression brings responsibility, and abuse brings consequences. Abraham Lincoln summed this up when he said "Those who deny freedom deserve it not for themselves." This weekend, we got a real-life demonstration of what happens when people believe in denying freedom to others.
Episcopal Bishop John-David Schofield of San believes that gay people should be banned from performing sermons, confirmations and rites. He recently led his diocese away from the national church on this issue, to ally with an Anglican church based in Buenos Aires.
The Episcopal Church responded by, appropriately, banning him from performing sermons, confirmations and rites.
I wish you would stand up for freedom, Governor, by identifying the Republicans who want to block lesbian and gay couples from marriage, and proclaim that their marriages are annulled. It would be no more arbitrary than annulling my marriage, which you did in 2004, and certainly teach a better lesson about commitment than banning committed relationships.
As Lincoln realized, the consequence of "doing unto others" is to be "done unto." Won't you see to it that justice is done?
Yours,

as a Democrat i think of marriage this way as long as we think of it as a right the government nor any secular agencies can legally stop people from marrying but we must let religion be determined by the concense of the individual former republican and stable on these views

Yeah, it's convenient for you to think of it that way, except that there is no shortage of churches that will gladly solemnize my marriage (and have) but there is a shortage of governments who will respect that church's decision and perform the necessary secular paperwork. So your argument is bogus as long as my government won't recgonize the same marriage that my God does.

if i were Anglican i would be under a more strict interpretation of scripture. so if i may does this mean we have to be rude in our approach to express our feelings or can we take more care in such a way. BTW im a southern baptist

What could be more rude than reaching into my Church, my family, my living room and my life, and telling me that you are somehow more qualified to decide who I can marry? You crossed the line of civility, @TheHarvestFest. "Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves." "Treat others as you would like to be treated." You're a rude bully, and calling me a rude bully doesn't change that simple fact.

who said i was an Anglican. but you must not mistake me this is not about blowing things up or about same-sex marriage but the up holding of the constitution of the united states is this letting peaceful differences be and under standing we all have the freedom of expression of religion in this nation. by this im urging you to be responsible with this freedom, not limiting it. see you are of one stream of anglican that is super liberal in the interpretation of the bibile
TheHarvestFest 1 year ago
An intrepretation of the Bible that says "treat your neighbor as you would like to be treated" is not liberal, it is conservative. Radical, yes, because it tells people like @TheHarvestFest that they should spend the gifts God gave them on feeding the poor instead of bullying others into what they think marriage should be.
The Constitution is not to protect the vile Klan that hurts others, but the meek who would otherwise be shut ot of society and the economy by bigots like @TheHarvestFest.
