Linnaeus is an application of evolutionary algorithms. Plant evolution is simulated in a closed system where plants mate, reproduce and die.

The software can be downloaded for free at

  • this is sweet, but how do i select a plant? Is there any way to manipulate the environment at all?

  • @TheKcTy All commands available while running the application can be listed by pressing F1, but these are limited to interventions in the natural selection (duplicating and killing plants). However, there are numerous parameters that define the environment which can be changed by modifying the "settings.xml" file in a text editor. Modifying these environmental parameters will result in that other plant types are best adapted to survival in the new environment.

  • Thanks for the notification. I've updated the URL.

  • Fixed. It has now been tested under 64 bit Windows 7, 64 bit Windows Vista, 32 bit Windows Vista, 32 bit Windows XP and Ubuntu 6.
