Since all DCIS is not the same as regards malignant potential, Dr. Hwang describes a clinical trial which will hopefully provide some answers.
Where the DCIS contains hormone receptors, patients may be treated 3 months prior to surgery to monitor response to medical (hormonal) therapy and some may not even need surgery, or where a mastectomy may have been needed, it may be possible to conserve the breast.

Dr. Hwang is A Hero, I Agree! There needs to be More doctors out there like her, and the word needs to get out about this DCI. I agree with lakegirl1108!! There IS overtreatment for this disease and I believe there should be more research on this... so I also thank Dr. Hwang for her work in this area. Thank God for doctors like her!!

Based on the seven breast surgeons I've dealt with, Dr. Hwang is a HERO...one of the very few doctors who doesn't try to scare patients into radical overtreatment for DCIS. Thank you for your work in this area. I'm a victim of overzealous breast cancer screening, and I have a horribly scarred breast and suffered two years of constant pain due to the "standard of care"...for nothing.
