EPONA.tv continues to question the training practices in professional equestrian sport. In the next couple of days we put forward more footage of international riders preparing their horses for competition, showing that rollkur is only part of a larger issue. Horses are routinely subjected to relentless pressure from inconsistently applied aids, forced into extreme positions and pushed beyond their physical and mental capacity.

This footage was obtained in 2009 using visible recording equipment and filmed in areas open to public access. The footage is copyrighted EPONA.tv 2009.

  • What is that happless stomping supposed to be??? Passage? Piaffe on the forehand?! Is that a new invention??!! these people are so so ignorant this is a nightmare for the horses... Thank you Epona, keep it up!

  • Hello. We were very curious on the same matter after having captured this sequence about a year ago, and did ask the Danish Equestrian Federation to comment on the footage. Their reply was that this was a horse "in the process of learning passage" and that the rider could not have handled the situation better.

  • urm - obviously I am against Rolkur etc., but can someone point out to me what is wrong here? All I can see is a horse learning to perform a movement - please can someone explain to me the issue? (just curious as to what im looking at)

  • Ive personally witnessed far worse so called piaffe and passage training at a well known training establishment in Europe. In the form of hit with the whip, kick with the spurs and then a hard, sharp yank on the reins. Apparently trying to annoy the horse into performing the movements. Mostly all you could hear was the whip..

  • Wtf? I've NEVER seen a horse move his hind end like that before.....

  • this truly sucks

  • @wejump2 However there are people in the training portion of his course in Canada right now, and I am taking lessons from this instructor AND going to his clinics. Well done on the research front.

  • @coucouper1 I went to Philippe Karl's web site. There are no certified instuctors from his school in any part of north america, so you clearly are not telling the truth. I copied this.Unfortunately, there are sometimes persons who pretend to be riding or teaching according to Philippe Karl's philosophy of Légèreté and use his name for advertising, but who in fact had no or not much direct contact with him and his system. Please make sure to always check the appropriate qualifications!

  • @coucouper1 Yes of course you are a dressage master with out one picture of yourself. Most people that can't ride FEI are "classical" and of course all the I judges and O judges just don't get it like you do. As to asinine please review you own comments.

  • I don't ride at FEI because I cannot believe that this is what people call 'lightness'. For your information I'm a student of a french master named Philippe Karl which means that I would have to be able to not only ride passage/piaffe but also train it. Properly. I refuse to respond to any more of you and your friends' completely asinine comments.
