I served with VX-9 from 2000-2003 and I remember doing the testing for the JDAM. This video is very nice to see because of all the hard work we put in. Vandy 1 (the last F-14) will always be my favorite. I think that my favorite pilot flying it was "Frado", he always pushed those birds.
I have a great pic of VX-9s Black Tomcat. That thing was awesome looking! Apparently it was the very last F-14 to roll off the assembly line around 1997. When the F-14 was retired in 2006 the same plane was converted to a gate guard in in front of NAS Oceana. And they repainted it... :(
The paint scheme pays homage to VX-4 (defunct) and this F4 Phantom in particular which was still in the boneyard in 2008. Go to Google Maps > Davis Monthan.> satellite image > Pictures on > Yuma St
The only F-14 I ever saw was at NAS Fallon and they told me it was the last one ever made. The Vampires use to come through when they were testing the new Sidewinder. They still taught us about the Phoenix missile and how it was designed before the F-14 and all it's tracking capabilities even though it was obsolete and we never touched them.
