An excerpt from a Tim Nagae's TV documentary, "Haley and Madonna."
"Haley and Madonna" depicts a young individual, Haley, a 13 year-old-girl with cerebral palsy, who is enthusiastic for the Miss America Pageant and sings "Don't Laugh at Me" at local pageants. She befriends with Madonna, a Miss America contestant and dancer, and they perform together on stage; Haley sings and Madonna dances with her choreography. Their performance brings tears to the eyes of the audience.
"Haley and Madonna" is a touching story, which was shown at 5 film festivals, won several film and video awards including a local EMMY and the 2004 Accolade Award - Best of Show www.theaccolade.net and was broadcast nationally on PBS. This excerpt shows a performance by Haley and Madonna in the TV studio at Community Television Network in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
It starts with the image of TV studio lights followed by the close up shots of a videotape counter and a TV camera superimposed with Haley and Madonna's faces and their feet to dramatize the introduction to their performance. Madonna walks into the panorama-like-screen in black and white, while Haley is sitting on the right side. Madonna walks toward the left side of the stage, then stops and poses in the dancing form waiting for the music to start. When the music starts the black and white image turns into a color image. The shots of Haley's singing of "Don't Laugh at Me" in several different angles dissolves into Madonna's dancing images back and forth along with the song during the performance. At the nearly end of the performance, their video images turn into an animation sequence with color pencil drawings. Nagae spent a month and half making this 20 second-animation sequence without any help. He wanted to make this performance look memorable to everybody who would watch this movie.
