XFactor Katie Waissel and Simon Cowell 2010

Simon Cowell has defended controversial X Factor finalist Katie Waissel saying that she is a really nice person.

However, he also added that it is Cheryl Cole's responsibility to look after her.

Syco boss Cowell said, "We have plenty of singers on this show who are amazing, but backstage they are monsters. I can vouch for Katie that she's a really nice person."

When asked about why Waissel was getting such a bad press, he added: "I would say that's Cheryl's responsibility."

Waissel won praise from the judges last night after singing the Jungle Book track 'I Wan'na Be Like You (The Monkey Song)' as part of Guilty Pleasures week.

Speaking afterwards, she said: "I had a wonderful time on stage tonight. I'm a huge fan of that song and it reminded me of my childhood and old school swing. I was just me and I was just free."

The X Factor results show airs tonight at 8pm on ITV1. This week there will be no double eviction for the first time.
