In the early 1800's, a slave named Stephen Bishop was a popular tour guide at Mammoth Cave in Kentucky. He also explored the cave, and made many important discoveries. He created the most detailed map of the cave, at that time. Today, Mammoth Cave is the world's longest, with nearly 400 miles of interconnecting passages. It is a national park, and is designated as a World Heritage Site. Stephen Bishop was America's first great cave explorer. His story is told in the new book "Grand, Gloomy, and Peculiar: Stephen Bishop at Mammoth Cave." Cave explorer and author Roger W. Brucker discusses his book in this interview with Shannon Kettler on WCPO-TV in Cincinnati. More information is available at www.rogerbrucker.com Bishop was the first famous cave explorer in America, and Brucker considers him among three explorers who were pivotal in Mammoth Cave's history and the chain of events that led to it becoming a national park. The others were George Morrison and Floyd Collins.
