@ytuseruber - recent aberration? you're 100% incorrect. st. augustine wrote 1700 years ago that we should not interpret certain books of the bible literally and proposed genesis as allegorical. origen was saying it even earlier. the rise in literalism in this sense came about as an effect of protestantism.

No, Mr. Coyne, a Christian is a CHRISTian according to who? to CHRIST of course, not human dogma. A CHRISTian is filled with the Holy Spirit who gives us God's truth. Mr. Coyne, you are speaking in a way that clearly indicates that you are not guided by the Holy Spirit but rather by your fleshly intellect. God's truth can never be comprehended by our intellect- only through the Holy Spirit. The light created by God on the 1st day was not the light of the sun rather it was the light of God.

I (a simple minded person) do not dismiss God from Evolution. What I can not do is reconcile millions of years of death and disease (via evolution) with a good God who calls His creation "GOOD". Why use death to bring about a deathless perfect world, then call that process good. When Jesus finds his friends grieving over the loss of their brother HE WEEPS. he does not comfort them by endorsing death and disease as God's great creative good evolutionary tool. Jesus died to bring death to death.

I agree! Thanks goodness we don't go with those foundamentalists who insist that the universe is 6000 years old. The universe is so much grander, so much more beautiful, than we can even begin to imagine. Of course, you won't see that if you lock yourself up with your bible.

@ytuseruber actually even the pope says that the clash between religion and evolution is absurd as they can both coexist. his exact words were "This clash is an absurdity because on one hand there is much scientific proof in favor of evolution, which appears as a reality that we must see and which enriches our understanding of life and being as such"

you cant get more official than from the popes mouth. so do you think the catholic church and almost all scientists are making things up?
