Some Libyan rebel groups have called for limited military assistance, such as targeted air strikes.

However, one US Senator has said direct military intervention would be counter-productive. John Kerry said the international community should prepare a no-fly zone, in the event of a massacre of civilians by the Libyan air force.

Much of the military equipment needed to enforce a no-fly zone is already based on the Mediterranean island of Malta.

Al Jazeera's James Bays reports from Malta.

  • Gaddafi is a revolting pig that needs to die. Long live a free Libya!

  • The western military isn't there to provide aid, or to evacuate innocents, which they might actually be doing both, but that is not why they are there. The military force is there to make sure the oil keeps flowing and they are there to oversee the placement of Libya's next Leader to the same end. Gadaffi is leaving, everyone knows that, except maybe Gadaffi himself, the real story that AlJazeera should be covering is who is going to replace him, and whether or not the exploitation will continue

  • @MrSpanky87 I do not listen to them. Life is precious, people are the most precious resource and Libya has given all for its due process. I am white, blue eyed, blonde hair and very American. I have served my country with honor and I was involved in the first strike on Libya and we all felt then that the job should have been done right but the Cold War was the priority. Libya can lead the great nation of Africa and it is very important that we show her how and give her the tools for success.

  • @nucsol don't listen to them man...there's lots of positive things about the USA. Lots of bad things....but also lots of positive things as well. Peace and light from Malta.

  • Mainstream opinion in Malta thinks that that so called ex-prime minister (Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici) is a joke/extremist. He actually called Gaddafi's Libya extraordinarily democratic. So please don't interview this individual like he's representing Malta in any way.

  • @nucsol Lol. Your deluded. Nobody likes America. You only think they do because you live in a media bubble. People in Libya dont like America, infact they dont want your "Humanitarian Aid" dropped on their cities. Alot of Libyans are happy with gaddafi, and dont want him to be replaced with a corporate puppet who will sell all their oil wealth to other nations.

  • @nucsol

    THIS CONVERSATION IS TERMINATED!

BECAUSE YOU ARE SUCH A SICK HYPOCRITE! INSTEAD FOR EXAMPLE OF ACKNOWLEDGING HOW YOU WERE KILLING VIETNAMESE MERCILESSLY ...NOOo, YOU COME AND SAY THAT THEY WERE BETTER OFF WITH AMERICANS KILLING THEM THEN KHMIR ROUGE! WHAT AN ANIMAL YOU ARE. INSTEAD OF ACKNOWLEDGING THRUTH YOU DO LIKE DICTATORS WHICH YOU ARE! YOU SAY THEY ARE BETTER OFF WITH USA! JUST LIKE QADAFI SAYS ALQAIDA WOULD RULE YOU IF I LEAVE!

PATHETIC HORRIBLE DISGUSTING ANIMAL YOU ARE!

  • @MYouSSofsaLahElDIn South Korea would not agree with you and given what happened to the people of Vietnam when we left, under the Khmer Rouge. They may not agree with you? Northern Iraq would not agree with you, Afghanistan actually wants us to stay, Pakistan could kick us out at any time, yet they don't. Yemen ? South America is a big part of the world, Coasta Rica, Panama. Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Columbia and Equadore seem to be on good terms with America. We do love people, all people.

  • If the UN determines that a no fly zone must be established Malta must play a part! Neutrality is like the Socialism of Mintoff (and Ghaddafi for that matter), a utopia and an illusion.
