Been working on this for a while & then hunting season hit. When we went to the New Mexico Outdoor Expo in August, they had Ruger Mk-3 .22LR pistols and then a variety of .22LR rifles - all with open sites. Up to this point my wife (Krickey) & daughter (Mini-Slim) have only shot my rifles with scopes on them. So I came home & searched YouTube for open/iron sites and only found vids for video games! So here's a video going through my guns with open sites - starting with the tried & true Daisy Red Ryder 70th Anniversary BB-gun, up to my .22LR Lever Action I've had since I was 8, then to my Remington M887 12-gauge shotgun. For handguns I utilized my "Baby Desert Eagle" .40-cal and my S&W J-Frame .357 Magnum.
Hopefully it's a good representation for those brand new to shooting as a reference point for what the ideal sight picture should look like for those of us not "addicted" to scopes and long-range shooting only.
Plus it was kind of a cool project for a rainy afternoon - it just took forever to finally get it pieced together and narrated.
Thanks for watching!

  • Interesting. The j-frame's front sight doesn't apear? I think I was aiming wrong all along. Thank you for sharing.

  • @lhusby - On my J-Frame the still shot is really hard to see since I've actually painted the front sight orange, so putting it against an orange target wasn't my most-brilliant idea in this vid. Check out the video portion from 4:18 to 4:27 - particularly at 4:24 when I turn it side to side a bit to see the front sight. I've actually gotten the best accuracy from this revolver with the front sight slightly ABOVE the notch in the rear site - so NOT flat across the top. Thanks for watching!

  • Simple and to the point. Thanks

  • @esgush - Tried to keep it simple & to the point... As noted in the description, for those of us that have shot for years, it's second nature. But for those new to shooting I think to many of us take it for granted & don't really teach the basics of using open sites - especially with the popularity of scopes that are much more straight-forward. Thanks for watching!

  • I have a vid posted explaining my sights on the enfield rifle I own. Have a look....

  • @SlimJPeak2007 I really thought you lowered the front sight and used the room in the rear one. But you painted that with orange. I tried the green color some time ago and worked well. But faded out fast.
