Farmers are tax exempt, because they buy their supplies in bulk.

Business's operate under a different tax code. Operating expenses such as fuel, can just be written of at the end of the year.

(Which means they wouldn't have to pay for the additional taxes.)

We were fighting big agra-biz way back in the 1960's when I was a Univ student. We've shouted for decades in support of small farmers who couldn't compete against huge companies, so they had to sell out cheap to the corporations. It was sad then & continues to destroy the US to this day! Our Congress members have allowed (been profiting by?) big biz driving out the small farmers AND TOTALLY RUINING OUR LAND & people's lives.. Started with cattle ranches in the 1800's. Who can stop Congress?

well you fail to mention that there getting the same amount of water that they got in 2003 or that they have junior water rights and that poverty and unemployment have been here for decades. or that California is reporting record tomato harvest this year. Were are in a lake bed and when they plant water intensive plants and expect there to just be water in a drought no less is foolish. It is unfortunate but its necessary and little will actually change.
