Singing Cicadas

Singing Cicadas-or Christmas Beetles as they are known locally are sap sucking insects. There ' singing' is a rasping of legs and wing to produce a high pitched whine.

These cicadas look to be Aussies. They do not rasp legs against wings, they have muscles that vibrate drum-heads inside their hollow abdomens which act as resonating chambers to make their 'music'. At the start of this video, you see its abdomen lifted high, the orange colored plates below it help guide and 'shape' the sound emitted from a wide opening, normally covered by those plates when at rest.
