Wear gloves and safety glasses. Remember that most cleaners are flammable and should be used outdoors away from open flames. Never remove any parts from a phonograph motor with tension in the springs.

  • If you are new to the hobby I might suggest joining the "Talking machine forum" and searching the post. Always good information there. Your springs should wind back the same way you took them out. No your motor won't run without that third governor weight. Search eBay for those parts. You may get the whole governor cheaper than just one weight....Good luck!

  • @JMLUVZ2FLY I should also say that the weights and springs must be matched in a complete set. You can not buy them seperately. Sometimes the springs are slightly different lengths and the governor will not work properly. Also if the weights do not weight exactly the same the motor will vibrate.

  • @JMLUVZ2FLY No, the machine will not play with a missing weight. The motor will vibrate badly and can damage the governor.

  • You are a LIFESAVER!

I just bought a Victrola stand up model and it has 2 spring barrels in 2 separate metal cases..do I wind them opposite directions to each other?

Also the Governor has a weight and spring missing of the 3..I only have 2 weights on there insted of 3..will it still work and if not can you sell me a weight and spring and the 2 little screws?

    Thanks!

  • which could erode spring barrels and springs

  • For grease I tend to use 2 parts flaked graphite to 10 parts petroleum jelly. I have official old stock victor lube 2 teaspoons in each barrel i use. The reason why i do not use wheel bearing grease is because if it gets a bit too warm in a room it settles to the bottom and and pools if the machine has not been used for a while. petroleum jelly is a bit more tenacious and covers the springs evenly when winding and does not pool. Modern lubes and greases have detergents in them.

  • Yup direction of springs its as if they act as on spring the main compliments the second one put them in the same direction and try winding the mechanism you snap the end of the other. I had to take many a spring barrel apart for people because they do not know the mechanics of the mechanism. or did not pay attention or take pictures before hand.
