I'm sure we can't know the mantis' intentions, but it seems more likely that it was going for food than just was protecting itself, especially with how it moves, and more importantly, remains at the bird feeder. I've not owned them, but I have observed countless mantids in the wild and they never seem to have a problem fleeing from predators if they wanted to. This mantis seems to be right where he wants to be.

I know that, I've seen videos of a mantis devouring a hummingbird. But I think in this case that's not what the mantis is trying to do. I could be wrong, though, since even after raising mantises of all sorts they still find ways to surprise me.

I've had mantises that would gladly eat my finger if given the chance. Those claws are strong, but those jaws are sharp and will draw blood!
