I smoked a joint before watching this movie.
I thought I was hallucinating like I was in Hunter S. Thompson's "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas"
Best line in movie history:
"I came into this game for the action, the excitement. Go anywhere. Travel light. Get in. Get out. Where ever there's trouble, a man alone."

Actually consumerism it good, it rewards people who combine land, labor, and capital effectively to generate manufactured products. These products are sold to increase the standard of living.
Abusive businesses can only exist with government subsidies, because the free market would force them into bankruptcy.
The film is about the government and how it destroys freedom. This is expressed when Harry Tuttle (the free market) is smothered by paperwork (government regulations).

This movie atmosphere and setting always remind me of those tales from my grand parents about Spain under the rule of General Franco. The curious thing is when the dictatorship became less brutal and fascist it became some sort of technocratic bureaucracy like in this movie in the 60s to 70s.
