Plus3 Suspects in JFK Airport Plot Plead Not Guilty3 Suspects in JFK Airport Plot Plead Not GuiltyThe Associated PressThree Muslim men from the Caribbean pleaded not guilty Wednesday to charges that they plotted to kill thousands of people and cause an economic catastrophe by blowing up John F. Kennedy International Airport. (June 25)[Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] ((New York)) A trio of alleged terror suspects extradited to New York from Trinidad. Prosecutors say these men were part of a terrible plot to blow up J-F-K airport last summer. The men's lawyers say differently. "All talk." "Severe rush to judgment" "A person is innocent until proven guilty." Prosecutors say these men wanted to explode fuel tanks at the airport, causing destruction and death there - and hoped the flames would further spread through fuel lines that run under nearby neighborhoods - killing families and children. The men are each charged with several federal terrorism conspiracy counts. ((Ted Shaffrey, The Associated Press)) "Law enforcement officials say the suspects had the horrible desire to kill people and cause terror. But they also say J-F-K was never in immediate danger. Although they allegedly talked big, the suspects did not have explosives, military training, financing or a concrete plan." The suspects were just brought in from Trinidad, and each pled "not guilty" in court Wednesday. Suspect Abdul Kadir is a former Guyanese member of parliament, a civil engineer and one-time small town mayor. ((Kafahni Nkrumah, Lawyer for Abdul Kadir)) "Mr. Kadir denies any involvement in this matter. He's shocked that he's here and having to face these charges, but he is confident that once the TAKE VO ((Trinidad, 2007)) facts come out it will show that he has no involvement in this whatsoever." Suspect Kareem Ibrahim is a diabetic, and has been hospitalized recently with mental problems. The lawyer for suspect Abdel Nur says the federal government's case is weak. ((Daniel Nobel, Lawyer for Abdel Nur)) "As I understand it that the government has no proof, none, that any step was taken to effectuate any harm to any American at any location, much less J-F-K." A fourth man was taken into custody in New York last June when authorities first announced the alleged plot. The men will remain behind bars until their next court appearance in August.
