This is Marley, he is a mustang who is only 110 days from wild (that's a little more than three months if you don't feel like doing the math). He is trained using positive reinforcement methods, such as clicker training, along with other variations. Please note I have never tied anything around his legs, forced him down, pulled him off balance, or anything of that nature while training this behavior. I simply rewarded him for laying down to roll, and then with shaping using the clicker, I've been able to get to this point in less than 3 weeks. Please visit our blog, www.laurenmustang.blogspot.com for more info or to read Marley's entire story from the beginning!

  • Can you make a video of how you taught him to lay down? I like how you said that you never tied his legs or got him off balance; in almost every YouTube video I've watched they tied something around the horses legs and I DO NOT want to do that, so I'd love to learn your method! :)

  • @MaeIsMyBay-I use a positive reinforcement training method called clicker training.Basically, you use a clicker (or any other sound for that matter) to mark a desired behavior. Because my horse was wild when I got him, he rarely laid down so I wasn't able to reward him while he was laying down. The only way he would was if he was wet, he wanted to roll. So I would give him a bath, let him into the arena and when he lay down to roll I would reward him, Soon, he did it on cue without getting wet.
