US Defense Secretary Robert Gates traveled to Iraq after a visit to Afghanistan. He met in Baghdad with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and President Jalal Talabani. They discussed the recent wave of attacks, claimed by a group linked to al-Qaida in Iraq, made up of Sunni insurgents. . Gates pressed Iraqi leaders to resolve differences over the status of the Kurdish region in the north of the country. He also held a townhall meeting with US troops at an airbase near the oil rich city of Kirkuk. VOA's Elizabeth Lee has the story.
