Agatha Christie knew Joan Hickson and told her that when she (Joan) was older, she should play Jane Marple. Which she did to perfection - there is no other.

Newer versions of Miss Marple have given performances wide of the mark by being openly emotional in ways a Victorian miss (as Marple would have been in her youth) would never have done. Only Hickson got it right.

Even the Queen of England said it, Ms. Hickson's Ms. Marple is Exactly as one envisioned it when we read the novels. She is the definitive best and no one will ever come close to her as Miss Marple. She was borne to play this role.

if memory serves me correctly, Joan Hickson played a housekeeper in one of Margaret Rutherford's Miss Marple movies.

Joan Hickson is the perfect Miss Marple. So much so I'm not even inetrested in watching other Agatha C. stories not starred by her. She is the quintessential English lady ! I love this actress and it seems to me she must have been an exquisite person in real life.

She was not really what I imagined whilst reading the books. And yet she became, for me, the ONLY Marple. I can't really bear to watch the others. They simply aren't cerebral or intelligent enough. They can;t seem to successfully convey Marple's fog (without being muddled) that Christie enjoyed having her police detectives deprecate.
