Robert explains how you can accomplish converting a .mts file to a .wmv file so you can edit the movie in other video editing programs.

  • I have the HF20 and have a Toshiba(PC) Satellite P35 laptop. I'm not too savvy with video and editing, so maybe you can help? What is the best burner I can get, to burn to DVD format, to be able to playback on my DVD player for my HD-LCD TV? What is the best software now(2011) for the HF20, for playback and editing for PC?

    THANKS!

  • @scootersays On the PC, I'm not quite sure since I spend little to no time using it to work on videos, but try asking around at this forum: "avsforum(dot)com" Same goes for the DVD program/player. I 100% use my Apple computers to produce my videos now, so sorry I cannot help you further.

  • hello robert what is the best way to convert .mts(from a canon HF20) on win 7 to a .mov I shoot 60fps 1080i and editing on Avid Media Composer :)

  • @HotelInnHeirs On the PC, I'm not quite sure since I spend little to no time using it to work on videos, but try asking around at this forum: "avsforum(dot)com"

Or try giving Google a try, as I know there are free programs that allow you to convert videos to a wide variety of formats.

  • you dont bother to mention that by converting to those formats the HD file loses significant quality and color depth which makes it look High Def...which in turn defeats the purpose in recording in HD in the first place if the very characteristics which makes it look HD are lost.

  • You don't have to mention it since this video is not concerning what happens to files when you convert them, but specially how to use the PC to convert video from the Canon HF20 to another format. You are always going to loose some quality when converting, but again, the video isn't directed towards discussing that.

  • Robert, I followed your steps but when I click on the .mts files from my Canon MG20, I hear the audio but the screen is black. No picture. Windows Media Player can't play them. I am using Windows 7. I downloaded VLC media player and they play fine. But I still can't upload them to Youtube. Any ideas?

  • You rock, thanks Robert!

  • I tried to download it but my computer said the developer was unknown so it could contain a virus so it wouldn't let me use it. Help!
