Winnipeg Police Save The Day After Anti White Protesters Nearly Cause Downtown riot

Passers by in downtown Winnipeg have the Winnipeg Police to thank for their quick response. We shot this video in Downtown Winnipeg, which is normally a very scary, violent place. However, on Saturday, October 8, 2011, it was even worse than normal. Two men were spewing anti white racist propaganda (accompanied by their anti white posters on the sidewalk), right across Portage Avenue from the MTS Center (where the NHL Winnipeg Jets play). A nearby woman called police on her cell phone, as a result of the two men screaming their racist diatribe at passers by, which almost started a riot. The Police showed up immediately, but had no choice but to let the men continue their ranting because their ranting just fell short of the technical definition of hate speech as defined by the Criminal Code, because, even though it was vile, it was still protected by the freedom of speech provisions in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The Police presence definitely was reassuring and prevented violence. This incident demonstrates why it's important for more funding for more Police Officers, to establish a bigger Police presence downtown, and in other dangerous parts of the city such as the North End. That's not to say that all of Winnipeg is dangerous. Far from it. There are hundreds of thousands of people who live in beautiful safe, clean, green suburbs such as Charleswood, Tuxedo, Lindenwoods, Whyte Ridge; and other new parts of Winnipeg just off Kenaston and Waverly, where street harassment crime is a rarity. For visitors to Winnipeg, just make yourself aware what parts of Winnipeg are safe, and which are not, and you should be fine. But be warned, especially after weekday work hours, and on weekends, with the streets almost empty, there are a lot of bad people around downtown who harass and threaten everybody that comes their way.
