Eleventh and final song on New York Tendaberry. Words fail me.

New York tendaberry... blue berry...
A rush on rum, of brush and drum,
And the past is a blue note, inside me...
So I ran away in the morning...

New York tendaberry, blue berry...
Rugs and drapes, and drugs and capes...
Sweet kids in hunger slums;
Firecrackers break and they cross and they dust and they skate, and the night comes...

I ran away in the morning...
Now I'm back, unpacked...

Sidewalk and pigeon;
You look like a city, but you feel like religion to me...

New York tendaberry... true berry...
I lost my eyes in east wind skies...
Here where I've cried, where I've tried,
Where God and the tendaberry rise...
Where Quakers and revolutionaries
Join for life, for precious years...
Join for life, through silver tears...

New York tendaberry...

    What amazing song and beautifiul Poetry, and anyone who LOVES New York - can see that it's not just a 'place' but a 'Religion'. Laura loved New York - it shaped her Music, her Life...

    New York is a Mosaic and Laura Nyro knew just where to fit all the Musical Pieces to make not just one Masterpiece, but many!!!

  • My husband loved her. and this was one of his favorite albums by her...

  • Laura often made up her own words and concepts; musical historians have never been able to catagorize her.

  • @pontello3 If I remember correctly, it meant something hard on the outside and very soft inside, Laura's image of New York.

  • what's "tendaberry" means? :)

  • You look like a City, but you feel like Religion to me..." Oh my, how is it I never heard those words before. Now I know what they mean though...

  • If you fancy yourself a songwriter this is the dedication it takes to be a great artist. Don't leave anything on the table musically or emotionally.Laura is still with us.Listen to the beauty and intimacy she requires of herself to breathe through. Amen.

  • If there is one positive to Laura not being here with us is that she's not witnessing what NYC has become today. She wouldn't like it...

  • More musical magic from Laura, I love it!

  • : God Sings Through Laura Nyro ...

  • True berry.

  • I saw her in 1969 or so at UC Irvine. It was quiet and this petite woman walked out, sat down at her piano and absolutely filled the hall with her voice. What a marvelous talent - her music is such an amazing legacy. I have been clicking around You Tube listening to her songs. Just as enjoyable now as in 1969.
