Rahu is situated below the sun and moon. It is between these two planets and the earth. When Rahu conceals the sun and moon, eclipses occur, either total or partial, depending on whether Rahu moves in a straight or curving way.

Below these planets is the earth, and 70,000 yojanas below the earth are the lower planetary systems--Atala, Vitala, Sutala, Talatala, Mahatala, Rasatala and Patala. Demons and Raksasas live in these lower planetary systems with their wives and children, always engaged in sense gratification and not fearing their next births.

They likely mean 80,000 miles of tunnels,or,one must travel through 80,000 miles OF tunnels, those tunnels don't have to all be vertical. Although the myths may exaggerate, isn't unreasonable to think there could be underground chambers or other worlds. There are caves open to the public all over, why is it such a stretch to think there could be secret caves and underworlds? Or, WERE open, until this Bat Fungus surfaced they can't explain; the death of Bats worldwide would be devastating.
