It's hard to judge John Brown's methods to free the slaves unless we have actually lived during those times. The laws in the southern states no longer applied according to the constitution of the land.

I'd also like to add, why are we celebrating a day for the criminal, Columbus. Don't we owe our native americans a holiday celebration? At least!
