Portugal flies in emergency aid to flood-hit Madeira, a popular tourist island as overnight death toll from floods and mudslides reaches 40.

There are fears the number of dead will rise further as bodies are pulled out of the thick mud and water that inundated the island's capital, Funchal and other towns.

The Portuguese army has sent specialists with helicopters and Police teams with sniffer dogs. An army spokesman also said they were sending both search teams and engineers who specialize in building and repairing bridges since several bridges were swept away or damaged by the floods which were mainly due to the heavy rain we had the week before.

As for the airport, it was reopened this morning after being closed yesterday. It was full of British tourists trying to get home after having their flight canceled.

About 120 patients were received yesterday at the Hospital.

The population of our Island, like me, surly woke up today in a sombre mood, as the count of the dead and of the cost to our all-important tourism industry began begins to rise.

There is also concern for more rainfall which is predicted for this afternoon.

This was the deadliest and most devastating storm to hit our beloved Island.

  • Me and my girlfriend were planning to go to Madeira this summer. We live in Gran Canaria, and we are decided to continue our plans to travel to Madeira. Tourism is also our main economic sector, and this is the moment were those travelling plans cannot be just changed. People of Madeira, we'll see in August 2010. Here in Gran Canaria we are very much sorry about this recent event. Madeira will rise again soon, you'll see it. Keep the faith, keep the hope!!!

  • Hey all!

We visited Madeira about 4 or 5 times. I feel terrible just looking at this clip...

Thank goodness the people who used to live in the 'houses' (...) ín the dry river-bed moved years ago. Otherwise there definitely would have been even more deceased to regret.

I wish the people of this fantastic island a lot of strength in this rough time. My heart goes out to friends and relatives of the victims.

    Love from the Netherlands!

  • I think you're stupid! Because if the situation was on your country the fucking "cash" would be out of OUR POCKETS.

So, shut the fuck up or just kill yourself. Ok sweetee???? _!_

  • Im from Madeira, and the situation here is complicated, but, in a few months, everything will be ok. So, you are welcome.
