Hi folks. As you can see I finally got around to uploading these videos...
If you're curious about what exactly the requirements are for the "Excalibur II Perfect Game" then check Atomos199's guide. GameFAQs doesn't let external sites link to their FAQs so go here:

http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/psx/game/197338.html

and scroll down to "Excalibur II Perfect Game Guide" for a full and detailed explanation.

A breif word about the pausing. This is a pretty obscure technique. The only page I could find about it was in Japanese so my understanding of it is limited to what Google auto-translated (not much), and what I discovered for myself by trial-and error. Basically, it's a technique which uses the fact that the timer DOES NOT RUN while the game is paused to have the console load data without the timer running. You can do it almost anytime there is a screen change but the amount of time saved is miniscule, and it would make the videos extremely tedious to watch, so the only time I use it is before and after skipping FMVs (the time saved here is considerable) and to avoid lag on certain screens.

I seem to have forgotten to explain HOW to do that disc speed trick in the beginning. Turn the PS2 on with no disc loaded (I just eject the tray) until you see that familiar "Browser/System Configuration" screen. Press triangle once to be taken to the first sub-menu, then press triangle again to get to the next sub-menu, where you can change the disc speed, and I throw on "smooth" texture mapping for the hell of it even though I don't notice any difference.

This segment turned out really good despite a few minor mistakes, none of which cost more than a second. Most of the time saved here comes from the Baku fight which was pure luck. I never expected to steal the Mage Masher on the first turn so I was pretty slow to input commands on the next round.

  • Yikes. Didn't notice this before. I'm pretty sure doing a level 1 challenge makes you as crazy as Isidor.

  • Hark, be that Ixnay??

Well, the hardest part of a level one challenge is avoiding the EXP in the first place. I've had worse...

  • Hi @ all

I've calculated the chances for the succes of FFIX - E2 PG on PAL !!!! It's impossible, with the target time of "1whoistornapart" you've 11:28 hours, ok. Let's calculate *60 = 688 minutes. So you've to calculate *70 and than divide it through /60 = 803 minutes.

Divide it through /60 so now you've 13:20 hours. How the hell can you save 1 hour and 20 minutes with items, i think that's is almost impossible, but it doesn't matter, I'll try it :P

    NelstaRRRR

  • Someone on the GameFAQs boards named big_kake was going to try this, but I haven't heard much from him since he started. You may want to ask about it there.

The best time I know of so far is ~11 hours by rlouisw here on YouTube. He did it without skipping FMVs, but that's the adjusted playtime for IF he had skipped them.

You still have a lot of time to make up though. Basically you will have to skip as many non-unique chests and items as possible, and probably other sacrifices too.

  • I'm starting my run right now. Wish me luck !

  • question wath path did you chose? path A/B/C??

  • Is it possible to do a perfect game with excalibur II if you don't skip FMV's?

  • Man, so many kudos on starting an endeavor that I don't think I could ever manage. My drug of choice in this case is Gameshark. I'm an avid completionist, though, so one day I might try a legitimate perfect FF9 game. Just... not for a while.

    Thanks for uploading!

  • @danbrown565 Characters have to gain as little EXP as possible because characters gain hidden stats when they level up with certain equipment. The optimal equipment for stat gaining is attained on Disc 4, so you have to be level 1 at disc 4 to obtain perfect obtainable stats.

  • I wasn't sure if maxed stats and the Excalibur II were possible. Neat. But I'm not one to fuck around with rushing through a FF game, so my version of a perfect game whenever it may happen would have Eiko having crazy high stats from leveling up Markus to 99. And lack the jump rope thing since I wonder if I'll ever be good enough to jump 1000 or more times in a row.

  • is it faster to keep your characters at level 1 as opposed to having them level up? Otherwise i dont see the point

  • Upon receiving my NTSC game and running it next to the opening cinematic from rlouise's channel, it would seem that a NTSC PS2 is also required. Any proof otherwise is more than welcome.

  • I am playing on a PAL PS2 that has been sensor modded so I can play NTSC games. Is it still possible to skip FMVs? Also, this may seem like a stupid question but does the game determine the framerate or would I need a NTSC console?
