Join British historian Bettany Hughes as she examines a long-buried chapter of European historythe rise and fall of Islamic culture in what is now Spain and Portugal.
Although generations of Spanish rulers have tried to expunge this era from the historical record, recent archeology and scholarship now shed fresh light on the Moors who flourished in Al-Andalus for more than 700 years.
This fascinating documentary explodes old stereotypes and offers shocking new insights. Youll discover the ingenious mathematics behind Granadas dazzling Alhambra Palace, trace El Cids lineage to his Moorish roots, and learn how the Iberian population willingly converted to Islam in droves.
Through interviews with noted scholars, youll see how Moorish advances in mathematics, astronomy, art, and agriculture helped propel the West out of the Dark Ages and into the Renaissance. What emerges is a richly detailed portrait of a sensuous, inquisitive, and remarkably progressive Islamic culture in Christian Europe.

  • Just clarifying something here, the "Moors" that took over Spain came from Morocco (mostly). However, it doesn't mean they're black. These people mixed with the Arabs. Only some Berber tribes are still African by ethnicity. Many modern day Moroccans are Arabs. They are actually under the Arab League if you look this up. Even Djibouti is under the arab league !

  • @leegeorgeson Wow you really sound like a jolly person ey? As the saying goes, it takes one to know one :)

  • Christianity vs. Islam... Two evil faiths, both destined to die in a couple centuries...

  • Thanks for uploading this!

  • Thank you Bettany, thank you for a trip back in time.I missed it all,the great events in history. You look absolutely marvelous darling, stunning.A woman so unique in mind and physique.I love you Bettany !!! more ancient history please.

  • @BongoBib Over 65% of European culture and up to 85% of Greek history has been fabricated. These are FACTS!!! Do you really know what you think you know? Are you sure, LOL?

  • @BongoBib You said the keyword "EUROPEAN". Every country knows the real Moors were Black. I really don't care what anybody that came after us says what we were and are. We were on the planet hundreds of thousands of years before you all were even born. So y would I listen to some theories when I have factual info. This is the reason why your people will go all over the planet killing the indigenous cultures because they hold the actual tablets, scrolls, etc. and can delete your theories.

  • @BongoBib HUH, LOL?!? 2 give U one piece of information that can be found here N the U.S. is the Sundry Free Moor Act. The Sundry Free Moor Act stated that the States could judge Free Moors under the Negro Act. The reason being because Negro, Black and Colored were terms given to slaves during the time of slavery. Moor or Moorish were the Proper nomens for us. We were denationalized by the STATES so that we could not tie ourselves back to our true lineages. Stop sticking you foot n your mouth!

  • @SiriusMoor9 I cannot for natural reasons relate to or be concerned about what others might have said or not on theese issues, you should address the relevant respond to the relevant parties. I never mentioned anything about Sub-Saharan Africa or Egypt, and what is your point anyway ? What are YOUR scources ? what gave YOU the idea that there ever existed a tribe/ nation/ people calling themselves Moors and regarded themselves as BLACKS ? No accessable source seems to suggests this.
