Lew actually wrote this song that was made popular by the Statler Brothers. He included it in his album, On My Own after retiring from the group. He later died in August of 1990.

  • Lew was such a great person. I was very young when he passed but i still remember going to his house and having his dogs chase me, and not because they wanted to play. This is my favorite song that he did.

  • Sounds like you might have been a neighbor. You have a very good memory for a 4 year old kid at the time he died. I've followed the Statlers most of my life and Lew was always my favorite. He inspired me to learn the guitar and start singing with my buddies. We never got discovered, but we did play all their favorites and people loved to hear us. Like Lew, I was the tenor, but I could never hit the notes he could. I feel so lucky they haven't removed his songs here yet on copywrite.

  • love this i never have heard lew do his song as a solo he is a teriffic writer and sings like an angle are thouse the statlers in the background or backup singers?

The Reid brothers, Don and Harold, recently wrote a book about their times with the Statlers. They didn't have a whole lot to say about Lew leaving in the early 80's, but did say he was sick. Some critics have written that the split was over a dispute of the type songs they were publishing and he left with bad feelings. They tried getting back together a time or two, but it wasn't meant to be. Lew did this with others backing him up. He wrote it a long time before.

  • Lew was my brother-in-law. I am uncle to his 4 children. I used to watch them when they were kids for a quart of chocolate milk. I was cheap labor :)

Lew was a father and a brother rolled into one to me.

Here's a bit of trivia for you....."FLOWERS ON THE WALL" was originally written using "JINGLE BELLS" as the melody. Also, "I LOVE VIRGINIA", a cut from the "ON MY OWN" album, was at one time being considered as the official Virginia State Song.

  • He will always be remembered for his wonderful writing skills and that very SPECIAL

    Tenor voice of his!!!

  • Thanks for posting this, and the rest of this album. I hope it stays up to bring awareness to his work that he never got during his life. Wonder who owns the rights to this? Compleat was dist. by Polygram which was absorbed into Uni. I'd love to see this and the other LP reissued w/ the "Hello Houston"/"

Don't Our Love Look Natural" single, would all fit snugly onto a single CD if his family owned the rights and could maybe be convinced to put it out themselves for the fans.

  • Hey thanks for posting. I never heard this album until tonite. Thanks!

  • My dad was very good friends with him. And for a while played music w/Lew's son. I'm sure that he would love to know that he inspired you to learn the guitar. Do you still play? don't give up maybe one day you will get discovered! :)
