@laurenemily2005 To my knowledge, most North American dentists like to use the rubber bite blocks. A bite block or gag is mainly chosen based on the preference of the dentist. Usually such gags/blocks are used either because pediatric patients don't/can't keep their mouths open for long periods of time or because it's easier for a patient to have a mechanical device keep their mouth open rather than relying on their own muscles. I hope this helps!

@eBiology Do most Dentists use them? If so, what situations are they used in? What makes a Dentist choose one or the other?

@laurenemily2005 They are called self-retaining mouth gags and they are an alternative to bite blocks.

What are the scissors things they put in to hold her mouth open? That looks so scary? I can't imagine being gassed, either!
