Folks here is an audio recording of retire Washington DC WMATA bus #9623 1992 Orion V 5.01 bus with Detroit Diesel DDEC 6V-92TA engine and Allison HTB-748 transmission. This bus and the rest of the 9600's 1992 Orion buses were later repowered to Series 50 EGR engines and Voith D-863 transmissions. This bus was recorded in 1998 on route-J2.The Orion buses on the picture were at the time brand new 4300's 1998 Orion buses parked at the Bladensburgh Garage.

  • It's a total shame that WMATA Metro got ride of the 9600's Orion V's, they were only 14 years old when they did and still had a lot of life in them they should have left those engines alone. I totally blame METRO for destroying those buses. The GMC Fishbowls were approx. 30 years old when WMATA retired those buses but the 9600's were retired way to soon. Now in my opinion I do believe that they were the cleanest, strongest, and fastest running buses the heck with that "clean go green crap".

  • @ORIONV9647Yea i never understood that the 9600's buses were repowered with newer series 50 engines and voith transmissions and still got retired.

  • @MAR1NAB5180 Cause they were horrible after repower

  • @Southeastern4204 Wow maybe if they would have kept the 6V92TA engines or rebuilt them some of those buses would probably still be around.

  • Hurray! I was wondering if there was any audio of them before they were repowered (and repainted)!

    They sound so great!

  • Yeah im glad i got to record this bus before it got repowered.
