Si la mar era de leche
Yo me haría un pescador
Pescaría mis dolores
Con palavricas d'amor
Dame la mano palomba
Para suvir a tu nido
Maldicha que durmes sola
Vengo a durmir contigo
These are echoes of my ancestral land: Andalucía, España. There was an age in medieval Spain, while the rest of Europe was immersed in the ignorance, pestilence and misery of the Dark Ages, where Christians, Jews and Muslims lived together in relative harmony. It was a land of universities and bathing pools. Christians in the rest of Europe refused to take daily baths because they thought of this as a heathen Muslim practice. It is believed that this practice of not bathing contributed to the spread of the black death, where a third of the European population perished.
There, the Jews flourished until the Catholic Queen and King forced them out just one year prior to the invasion of the New World. Who knows what kind of world it would be today, had this not taken place.
'Mar de Leche' (Sea of Milk) is a medieval Hispanic Jewish song in traditional Ladino - the medieval Spanish dialect of Sephardic Jews.
If the ocean was milky
I would turn into a fisherman
fishing for my sorrows
with loving words
Lend me your hand, o beloved bird
that I may ascend to your nest
unfortunate one who sleeps alone
I've come to sleep with you
beautiful
