I was a teenager when I heard Roy Haynes quintet play "Equipoise" live and the beauty of the piece with its lovely, sing-along melody was inescapable. Of course Stanley Cowell wrote the tune but Roy Hayne put his musical stamp on it and spread the joy conveyed by it to so many adoring fans that it became a classic that will now always be a part of Roy's musical legacy.
