  • 1. Expansion phase: Air is heated and presses piston downward.

    2. Air flows through copper wool and transfers heat energy to copper wool.

    3. Compression phase: Air transfers heat energy to cooling jacket.

    4. Air flows through copper wool and absorbs heat energy.

    (Note that there is a heating filament ("Heizspirale") in the top of the cylinder and a water-cooled jacket ("Kuhlmantel") around the bottom of the cylinder.)
