A film version of a theater piece by Yehuda Yannay from 1969 created by Jim Clark and Yehuda Yannay in 1973. "Houdini's Ninth", the theater piece, celebrated the Beethoven Bi-Centennial.
Yannay celebrates the making a birthday cake on a vinyl LP of the Ninth Symphony. At the same time, bass player David Phillips, acting the role of a mental patient, escapes temporarily from his straitjacket to play the famous tune from the finale of the Ninth Symphony. Beethoven would have "rolled over" in his grave if he knew how his birthday is celebrated in our time. Michael Sullivan and Phillip Schoeller play hospital orderlies.
This posting is dedicated to the memory of David Phillips, who was a member of the bass section of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra.
