Venerable master Huairang asked Mazu, who would sit like a statue for hours, "Why are you in meditation?" Without moving he replied, "To become a Buddha."
At this Huairang immediately began polishing and polishing a rough stone from the ground against a slab. Mazu eventually stirred to ask him why, to which Huairang replied he was making a mirror. Mazu said "How can you ever make a mirror by polishing a stone?"
Huairang fired back "How can you ever become a Buddha by sitting?"
