Stop blaming Thatcher. This crisis started in the US, and if I remember correctly, the economy was in a sound state back in 1997. Now who's been in power for the past 11 years?

Sadly there wasn't any economic sense over the last 30-40 years. Thatcher convinced us she was saving billions by selling off council houses. Total expenditure by government 1980 - 1988 for housing benefit & support for families buying houses or forced to rent in the private sector due to council houses being sold off: £6bn. Total revenue (from sale of council houses) and savings from not needing to renovate: £3.5bn. Source: Privatization and Its Alternatives - La Follette public policy series.
