Durham native and Jordan High School graduate Chris Dawson shot this video of a plane getting struck by lightning near Heathrow Airport in London.

The video has been all over the networks the past few days: an Airbus A380 getting struck by lightning while flying near Heathrow Airport in London.

  • Its funny how lightning doesn't do jack but mobile phones will make planes crash instantly =/

  • modern airplanes (excluding homebuilt and most single-engine piston planes) are built to withstand lightning to a certain reasonable level. When an airplane is struck by lightning, usual damage is to the structure in the fashion of melted skin - at the entry and exit poiints, along with a couple intermediate points along the lightning path, and occasionally may fry a couple electronic devices (which, by the way, are also designed to withstand lightning).

  • @chsxtian Not exactly. I'm a pilot and the instruments they use would get pretty messed up from cellphone signals. But lightning just goes through the metal frame of the plane and shoots out to the ground. Because electricity always try to go to the ground.

  • @OldSerpentOfSin now you´re saying that planes were designed to be crashed by mobile phones?

  • @RandomAlexLol It is the way the plane is designed... :p

  • @RandomAlexLol I sincerely hope you're being sarcastic.

  • It took me a long time to figure out what direction the plane was traveling.

  • @Peace7Maker What the fuck. The fuel is made from oil like many fuels. Which arent conducting which means the lightning will go over the skin of the plane. If that bolt would go through the skin of the wings it would crash if not on fire because the fuel would leak out. But the plane isnt build for lightning going through the wings, thats crap. But why should lightning go through the inside? Noone inside is grounded. The lightning just hits the plane because air has more resistance.

  • @samisgreat80 isnt the fuel in the wings? i dont call that protecting the passengers : Booooom!!!!

  • @RandomAlexLol modern plans dont crash instantly it gets a little bit of damage over the contact points and then elmos fire, thats about t

  • thats no plane, thats a dragon

  • @RAWRROCK1 No, it just happened to strike at the exact coordinates at the exact height of a giant metal tube.
