What a performance. I remember getting the original Mercury single of "Stranded" back in the '70s.

Don't listen to all them that worship them now of my age (fifties) - they all thought they were crap at the time and were listening to dull,self indulgent progressive rock and soppy west coast stuff. Hah the stupid arseholes.

@MrSKINFLICK Even John Peel slated "Jet Boy" when it came out as a single in 1973 and then played it religiously in 1977 when it was re-released with "Babylon" and "Who Are The Mystery Girls ?". It was all the "godfathers of punk" and "way before their time" and "too much too soon" (HAH).

Agree about the stuff on German TV - FANTASTIC. Foresight and a real appreciation of rock 'n' roll.

Also I remember Bob Harris saying that. I thought he said it because they were miming at the time !

@mecormany thank god I live in manhattan,NYC I can only imagine what you guys went through,I once drove through the south with NY plates and some friends we all had our look punk,glam mixed and these fuckin asshole cops pulled us over and were harassing our girlfriends and wives sayin "if these guys are hurting you we can take care of them just let us know,you don't have to be a victim ya know" I mean really they were so pissed of what we looked like and that we had GFs and wives they couldn't

to say that progressive rock is pretentious because the musicianship was good is the same as saying the new york dolls were lousy because their sound was 'sloppy'. i thoroughly enjoy both prog and glam rock. of course each genres have their overrated artists but to write either off entirely is silly

Yes, they said "they can't play" all the time. Funny how these "fans" don't seem to have any of this stuff on the original vinyl.....yet they all have attics full of mouldering Jethro Tull and Yes albums.

@TOBERT001 That is the truth! To love the Dolls in Midwest Middle America was to be virtually ostracized. I remember one other kid who loved the band and he and I became friends because of that alone. Nobody "got it". But hear them talk today and they were all punks goin' around "whathefucksittoyou?'to people asked if they were gay. (which was usually the first thing you got asked followed by 'they can't even play').

As if. It was all long guitar and drum solos and pretension. Viva la Dolls!

@TOBERT001:The Old Grey Whistle Test was never aired in Germany of course,but we read a lot of mockery about Bob Harris (with apt cartoons) in the NME.The venue of OGWT looks like a run-down high school auditorium(i only got to know the OGWT via YouTube now)+some bands don´t seem to be in the best mood.Mike Leckebusch did everything to make his foreign bands+interpreters feel at home,well,that was the time when the ARD(first German public channel)was still rich+everyone paid TV fees!
